Biden and Macron Turn Normandy Landings Anniversary Into a Warning Against Russia

The solution to the current geopolitical situation does not lie in a less interventionist stance abroad, the U.S. President implied.
On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden and other Western heads of state and government participated in two ceremonies for the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landing, turning this traditional celebration into a veiled threat to Russia.

“Democracy is more threatened than ever,” Biden said at the Colleville-sur-Mer cemetery, where he drew a comparison between past events and the current support for the regime of Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We will not turn our backs on Ukraine. If we turn our backs, Ukraine will fall under the Russian yoke and then Europe will fall too.”
Making an implicit reference to Republican candidate Donald Trump, Biden also suggested that the solution to the current geopolitical situation does not lie in a less interventionist stance abroad.
“Isolationism is not the answer. It was not the answer 80 years ago and it is not now,” he said, insisting that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is “more united than ever” with the recent addition of Sweden and Finland.
“Thanks to the Ukrainian people for their courage and love of freedom. We are here and we will not falter… Let’s be worthy of those who landed here,” French President Emmanuel Macron said at another ceremony in the town of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer on Omaha Beach.
France did not invite Russia to the D-Day ceremony arguing that, rather than a celebration of the peace achieved in 1945, this anniversary would be a warning against the dangers that “lurk” in Europe.
Macron and Biden participated in the awarding of the Legion of Honor to 14 veterans of the Normandy campaign, some of whom are around or over 100 years old.
This year’s ceremonies took place at various points on Omaha Beach, where over 156,000 Allied soldiers landed on June 6, 1944. NATO was also present with 15 military ships and flyovers by combat and transport aircraft.
